I’ve been seeing this call for help far too often over the last couple of years, and honestly, it makes me sad. Especially as it has hit home for me too. Again.
If you want to read about my most devastating career fail, check out this post.
With it being so fresh, I thought I’d share my top tips for navigating the dreaded redundancy call.
1. Get the Facts
When I got the call, I was in such shock I couldn’t gather all the details about what happened and why. I spent the next 24 hours spinning conspiracy theories about why it was me. Sound familiar?
After the initial news, give yourself time and reach out to a trusted source for the details. Knowing the "what" and "why" can provide peace of mind and help you move forward.
2. Know Your Rights
Redundancies happen, often through no fault of your own. Financially, you’re entitled to certain things, depending on your contract and time with the company. Use the consultation period given by your employer to explore other roles within the company or gather recommendations.
If you believe the redundancy was unfair, consider speaking with an employment lawyer to weigh the pros and cons of legal action. But remember, the long-term impact on your energy and finances is something to consider.
3. Take Your Time
The instinct to rush into the next job is strong, but resist it.
Scattergun applications won’t help your mental health or job prospects. Quality trumps quantity when applying for new roles. Take your time to pause and regroup before you start looking for a position that’s truly right for you.
4. Reflect
It’s not about right or wrong; it’s about lessons and growth.
Now is a moment not to languish in the unfortunate, but ask yourself:
What did I enjoy most about this role?
What aspects of the company culture suited me best?
What was I most proud of?
What aspects would I want to keep or let go in my next role?
These reflections can enrich your resume with anecdotes and help steer your career in a fulfilling direction.
5. Spread the Word
Your career reputation is invaluable. It can feel uncomfortable to announce you’re job hunting, but it empowers others to lift you up. Reconnect with your network and ask for recommendations to enhance your LinkedIn profile.
Don’t forget to activate the "Open to Work" feature!
Ask yourself: Who in my network could most support me?
6. Use the Time Well
Job hunting is time-consuming but not a full-time job. Use any spare time wisely. Is there a course you’ve been wanting to take? Skills to sharpen? With countless free resources online like Udemy or LinkedIn Learning, you can level up in areas that future-proof your career.
Ask yourself: What would I regret not learning during this downtime?
7. Self-Regulate
Redundancy brings a whirlwind of emotions—anger, frustration, shame. Prioritize your mental health. Engage in activities that bring joy, like listening to uplifting music or savoring tasty foods. Light calming candles, walk in the sunshine, and connect with energizing people.
Monitor your mental state, practice self-compassion, and ask: How compassionate am I being with myself right now? If you're not sure, go spend time and chat with a confidante.
8. Mindset Matters
A healthy mindset is crucial. Reflect on past successes and how you’ve overcome challenges. Consider resources like journaling, self compassion love letters or gratitude lists to keep your mind in a positive space.
